Student’s Summer Job Turns Into a $10 Million Gold Discovery

Student’s Summer Job Turns Into a $10 Million Gold Discovery

An ordinary summer construction job has turned into an extraordinary stroke of luck for an 18-year-old Belgian student, after he uncovered a hidden stash of gold worth more than $10.4 million.

The student, identified only as Kobe, was working during the first week of his summer job with construction company De Brand in Dendermonde, Belgium. He was helping renovate a former brewery site when he noticed what initially appeared to be a few €1 coins in the dirt. What happened next transformed a routine morning at work into a discovery that could potentially change his life.

Kobe was digging near the foundations of a historic villa to make room for sewage pipes when he came across the hidden treasure. The stash included numbered gold bullion bars and coins wrapped in a plastic bag. The items had been concealed inside a bricked-in basement wall rather than placed in a conventional safe.

“At first, we had our doubts” about whether the metal was genuine gold, Kobe told Belgian broadcaster VRT NWS. The numbers on the bars, however, quickly suggested that the discovery was much more significant than a handful of old coins. The collection has since been valued at more than $10.4 million.

The location of the discovery provides an important clue to the gold’s possible history. The property was originally built for Theophilus van Assche, associated with the brewery that operated in Dendermonde from the late 19th century until 1970. Local historian and former mayor Piet Buyse believes the treasure may have belonged to the Van Assche brewery family.

The circumstances of the hiding place also suggest that the gold was deliberately concealed many decades ago. According to Kobe, the basement had apparently been filled in at some point, with the gold hidden behind brickwork. That detail has fueled speculation about why the treasure was placed there and why it was never recovered.

For now, however, the student cannot simply walk away with his extraordinary find. The gold was handed over to police and is being held in Brussels while authorities investigate its ownership and determine whether anyone has a legitimate claim to it. Under Belgian law, potential claimants have a five-year period to come forward. If no rightful owner is identified and the treasure is not connected to criminal activity, the proceeds could eventually be divided between Kobe and the property owner.

Kobe himself appears to be taking the situation cautiously. He was not expecting to receive a fortune when he arrived at work that morning, and he has said that he would be happy to receive a reward if he ultimately qualifies for one.

The discovery is a remarkable reminder that history can remain hidden in plain sight. For decades, a fortune in gold appears to have sat behind a wall at a former brewery property, unnoticed by generations of residents and workers. It took an 18-year-old on a temporary summer job, digging for a completely different purpose, to bring it back into the light.

Whether Kobe ultimately receives millions, a smaller reward, or nothing at all will depend on the investigation and the legal ownership of the treasure. For now, though, his summer job has produced a story far more valuable than any paycheck: a buried fortune, a century-old mystery and one of the most remarkable workplace discoveries imaginable.
